Let’s Talk About the Popular Culture

To my way of thinking, popular culture as a culture imperialism has entered into our life with (post)modernization, and also capitalism. If you are going to ask why I think so, postmodern era is characterized with “consumption”. Namely, capitalism creates consumption society by using media as a tool. Well, how does this mechanism work? Capital structures strengthened their hegemonies in the market. That’s why; there came up a need to consume unnecessarily in the society. Especially, to the majority of people who have different demographic characteristics in the society were imposed a feeling of living the moment/immediate consumption. This has started to control people's consumption habits {happiness to consumption, spending a leisure time, entertainment...}. As a result of this process, "popular culture" became one of the most important concepts which support the consumption society. *

Now let’s talk about the damages of popular culture… First of all, media is numbing people. Secondly, our senses are blunting. Thirdly, we are drawing consolation in everyday fun. Fourthly, we are accepting social inequalities. Fifthly, we are ignoring the social injustices. Sixth and finally, we are becoming indifferent-blasé and we are trying to spend the day. These all show us that the new culture which is imposed to society is an "obedience culture". **
