Some people believe that people in technical fields don't need to work on writing or reading much. Other people believe that studying the humanities is a waste of time. Still others believe that we should all learn outside our comfort zones: English majors should learn some computer coding skills, and engineers should read Shakespeare. What is your opinion?
*Humanities is described as the academic disciplines that study aspects of human society and culture.
Work is important for your living. You can't go on living without money, that's for sure. But in order to enjoy your life, you need some extra hobbies to do in your free time. If you put the work at the center of your life, and don't make anything else in your free time, you will stuck in a chronic unhappines at some points of your life.
In order to have a quality life, you need to do some activities that increase the quality of your life and make you a better person than yesterday both socially and intellectually.
For example: Watching movies, reading books, going theatre plays. How can they increase the quality of your life? Let's get in details:
Reading is the way I run away from the reality. George R. R. Martin, the authors of the Game of Thrones, said "A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, the man who never reads lives only one." He is right! Reading travels you from somewhere to other. You learn about other countries culture, their lifestyles, their fantasies.
Reading is a way of increasing your life quality. How can so?
Just imagine a person who reads Shakespeare for the first time and loves it! He might want to see a theatre of one of Shakespeare's plays. And this might be the beginning of his love for theatre plays.
Or, you might heard that your favourite book's movie adaption is coming. He might want to see it and, start loving cinema.
Let's take the example a step further,
Watching Hollywood's high budget movie is fun. But you can't expect to develop yourself while keep watching them. You need to watch different countries movies in order to have a bigger perspective of the world. For example, you might have a distance for the Cinema of Iran. But in 2017 a movie from Iran received the Oscar in The Best Foreign Movie category. Asghar Farhadi is a succesful director at expressing feelings to audience in different perspectives. You can't blame someone in his movies, because as the movie continues, you realise that everyone is right in their own way. He is a wonderful director, but you can't know him if you stay in your comfort zone.
I love watching movies from different countries. Because the more I watch, the more I learn about other cultures. And seeing the common things we had with other nations make me wanna learn about them more.
Learning about other cultures is not a waste of time. Globalisation is a fact now. The more you learn about other cultures, the more you adapt this world.
Writing, on the other hand, is an art. You need to read a lot before attempt to write. At first, it might seem like writing is easy. But when you try to write, you see it's not that easy, though.
On the other hand, we are at the edge of the Industry 4.0. Technology is all over us. In such a world, learning some coding skills might prevent losing your job. Because robots will be employed. And you need to develop yourself in order to keep in the employment field. Unskilled labours will lose their jobs to robots, that's a fact.
Just think about Da Vinci. He was good at many things at the same time. People back then were interested in many things. But now people think the things they don't understand is a waste of time.
